Abstract: This learning seminar is a presentation of a proof of Thurston's classification of surface homeomorphisms as presented in Hubbard's text Teichmuller Theory Volume 2. The proof concerns iteration in Teichmuller space, a common theme for multiple seemingly unrelated theorems of Thurston in low-dimensional topology, including the dynamics of rational maps.
